Taiwan is recognized by Expat Insider as Asia’s safest destination for family travel, offering spotless barrier-free nursing rooms and high-speed rail links connecting cities in under two hours. A 6- to 8-day family itinerary combining Taipei, private boat cruises on Sun Moon Lake, and historic Tainan gives children and grandparents varied highlights with minimal walking. By law under MOTC Road Traffic Act Article 31, all charter vehicles must provide approved child safety seats for children under four years old.
“Traveling with young children and seniors in Taiwan is remarkably stress-free. Every metro station, visitor center, and scenic boardwalk provides spotless barrier-free facilities, while Taiwanese hospitality toward families is world-renowned.”

Pace for every generation
Plan one main sight in the morning and one in the afternoon, with a long lunch and rest between. Many of Taiwan’s best experiences are short: the Sun Moon Lake boats, the ropeway, Shifen’s sky lanterns and Tainan’s temples all involve little walking.
Jiufen, by contrast, is all stairways, and the Alishan sunrise needs a very early start. Tell us about mobility and we will choose viewpoints that can be reached by car.
Family-friendly highlights
- Shifen: write wishes on a sky lantern and release it beside the railway.
- Sun Moon Lake: boats between three piers and a 7-minute ropeway ride.
- Yehliu Geopark: strange rock shapes on the coast; concession tickets cost NT$60 (check eligibility on the park’s site).
- Tainan: street food in small portions, perfect for grazing together.
- Hot springs: private hot-spring rooms in Beitou or Jiaoxi let families bathe together.
Getting around
The high-speed rail covers Taipei to Tainan in about 1 hour 45 minutes. A private vehicle sized for your group and luggage makes the rest easy, especially in the mountains. Tell us your children’s ages when you enquire so we can confirm suitable seating.
Taiwan Railway’s express trains to the east coast are reserved-seat services, and seats sell out at weekends and holidays. We book them as early as reservations allow.
When to go
- October–November and March–April are the most comfortable months.
- July–September is typhoon season and very hot; keep a flexible day if summer is your only option.
- The 7-day Lunar New Year break (4–10 February 2027) brings full trains and closed family restaurants.
Frequently asked questions
Is Taiwan good for a family holiday?
Yes. It is compact and well connected, with short, varied sights, food that suits children and hot springs for grandparents.
Is Taiwan stroller-friendly and wheelchair accessible?
Taipei’s metro (MRT), High-Speed Rail stations, and premier cultural sites like the National Palace Museum and Taipei 101 offer world-class barrier-free accessibility with step-free elevators and ramps. However, hillside heritage destinations like Jiufen and older temple alleys feature steep stone stairways. A private charter vehicle bypasses strenuous stairs by providing direct drop-offs at road-level entrances.
Are child safety seats required by law in Taiwan private charter cars?
Yes. Under Article 31 of Taiwan’s Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act, children under four years old (or under 18 kg) must sit in an approved child safety seat in the rear seat, with rear-facing seats mandatory for toddlers under two years old. Professional private tour operators provide certified ISOFIX child seats upon request.
How many days should a family spend in Taiwan?
Six to eight days allows a relaxed pace: Taipei, Sun Moon Lake and Tainan, with rest time built in.
Is Taiwan suitable for grandparents with limited mobility?
Largely, with planning. Jiufen and the Alishan trails involve many steps, but most views can be reached by car and we plan around them.
What is the best time for a family trip to Taiwan?
October to November or March to April, outside typhoon season and the summer heat.
