Alishan: The Kingdom of Clouds
Taiwan’s Alpine Sanctuary

Alishan

Where ancient red cypresses touch the sky and the forest railway climbs through a sea of clouds.

Overview

Above the Mist

Rising over 2,000 meters above sea level, Alishan National Scenic Area is a realm of mist and myth. Famous for its “Five Wonders”—Sunrise, Sunset, Sea of Clouds, Forest Railway, and Sacred Trees—it offers a cool, fragrant escape from the tropical heat below. Here, time is measured not in hours, but in the slow growth of thousand-year-old trees.

Why Visit

The Iconic Red Train

The Alishan Forest Railway is an engineering marvel. Originally built for logging in 1912, this narrow-gauge train zig-zags up the mountain through dense forests of cedar and cypress. Riding the vintage red diesel train as it pierces through the morning mist is the quintessential Alishan experience.

Nature

The Sacred Trees

Walking the Giant Tree Trail feels like entering a cathedral of nature. You will encounter the “Sacred Trees”—immense Formosan Red Cypresses, some over 2,000 years old. The air here is rich with phytoncides, natural compounds emitted by the trees that reduce stress and boost immunity.

What To Expect

Zhushan Sunrise

Wake up at 3:30 AM to catch the train to Zhushan. Watching the sun leap over the Jade Mountain range is a spiritual event.

Sea of Clouds

In autumn and winter, the valley fills with a thick blanket of white clouds, creating an ocean-like view from the peaks.

Oolong Tea

Alishan produces some of the world’s best High Mountain Oolong Tea. The cool, misty climate creates a tea that is floral and creamy.

Cool Climate

Temperatures hover around 10-15°C even in summer evenings. It is a refreshing retreat, but requires warm clothing year-round.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Forest Railway fully open?
The main line from Chiayi to Alishan was damaged by typhoons and has been under repair for years. Currently, it is only partially operational. Most visitors take the bus up the mountain and use the train only for short scenic trips inside the park.
Can I see the sunrise every day?
No, the view is weather-dependent. Alishan is often misty. On average, the perfect clear sunrise over the sea of clouds is visible about 30% of the time, mostly in autumn and winter.
Is it difficult to hike?
Not at all. The main trails (Giant Tree Boardwalks) within the recreation area are well-paved wooden walkways with stairs. They are suitable for children and seniors with moderate fitness.
What is Fenqihu?
Fenqihu is a famous halfway stop on the railway line, known as the “Jiufen of the South.” It is famous for its old street and the traditional railway bento box lunch.
Can I fly a drone?
Drone usage is strictly restricted within the National Forest Recreation Area to protect wildlife and tranquility. You must obtain a special permit, which is rarely granted to tourists.
