Alishan
Where ancient red cypresses touch the sky and the forest railway climbs through a sea of clouds.
Above the Mist
Rising over 2,000 meters above sea level, Alishan National Scenic Area is a realm of mist and myth. Famous for its “Five Wonders”—Sunrise, Sunset, Sea of Clouds, Forest Railway, and Sacred Trees—it offers a cool, fragrant escape from the tropical heat below. Here, time is measured not in hours, but in the slow growth of thousand-year-old trees.
The Iconic Red Train
The Alishan Forest Railway is an engineering marvel. Originally built for logging in 1912, this narrow-gauge train zig-zags up the mountain through dense forests of cedar and cypress. Riding the vintage red diesel train as it pierces through the morning mist is the quintessential Alishan experience.
The Sacred Trees
Walking the Giant Tree Trail feels like entering a cathedral of nature. You will encounter the “Sacred Trees”—immense Formosan Red Cypresses, some over 2,000 years old. The air here is rich with phytoncides, natural compounds emitted by the trees that reduce stress and boost immunity.
