Jiufen: The Mountain Town
The Golden Mountain City

Jiufen Old Street

A labyrinth of red lanterns, misty alleys, and tea culture suspended in time.

Overview

Echoes of the Gold Rush

Once a prosperous gold mining hub during the Japanese occupation, Jiufen (Nine Portions) has transformed into Taiwan’s most atmospheric destination. Perched precariously on the mountainside facing the Pacific Ocean, its narrow alleyways, glowing red lanterns, and traditional teahouses evoke a sense of nostalgia that feels like stepping into a Miyazaki film.

A-mei Teahouse
Why Visit

The Teahouse Aesthetic

The iconic A-mei Teahouse is the visual heart of Jiufen. With its wooden architecture and rows of red lanterns, it is widely rumored to be the inspiration for the bathhouse in Spirited Away. Sipping high-mountain Oolong tea here while watching the mist roll in over the ocean is an essential Taiwanese experience.

Jiufen Old Street (Jishan Street) is a sensory overload of aromas. The town is famous for its Taro Balls (chewy, sweet dumplings served hot or cold), glutinous rice cakes, and peanut ice cream rolls wrapped with cilantro. It is a street food paradise hidden in the clouds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it really the Spirited Away town?
While visually strikingly similar, Hayao Miyazaki has denied that Jiufen was the specific inspiration. However, the resemblance is uncanny, and the “magical” atmosphere is undeniable.
What time do shops close?
Jiufen shuts down earlier than Taipei’s night markets. Most souvenir shops and food stalls close between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Teahouses often stay open later, until 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
Unfortunately, no. Jiufen is built vertically on a mountainside with narrow, crowded stairs and uneven cobblestones. It is very difficult to navigate with strollers or wheelchairs.
How do I get back to Taipei at night?
The bus stop for returning to Taipei can get extremely crowded after sunset. It is recommended to leave before the peak rush (7 PM) or consider booking a private shuttle/taxi back to the city.
Can I stay overnight?
Yes, there are many “Minsu” (Bed & Breakfasts) in Jiufen. Staying overnight allows you to experience the town in the early morning or late night when the day-trip crowds have vanished.
